In the build-up to this weekend's British Grand Prix, the McLaren team-mates have been at pains to point out they are working well together despite their status in the standings.
Heading into Sunday's Silverstone showdown in front of a 120,000-strong crowd, in what is a dream scenario for the British public, Hamilton leads the way by just six points over Button.
Yet there are those who believe the harmony and accord that exists between them cannot go on, that it will fall apart at some stage.
For instance, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has claimed just one incident between them will see their "love in" fall apart.
In one newspaper that led to a photograph of Hamilton and Button, arms around one another after a recent one-two finish, inside a giant red heart.
One of Horner's drivers, the duo's Championship rival Mark Webber, suggested what was being staged by Hamilton and Button was nothing more than a "smoke and mirrors" act.
The comments from Horner and Webber were perhaps nothing more than an attempt to destabilise them, an attempt at mind games.
Button in particular, though, was having none of it as he said: "I was wetting myself when I saw the paper. It's hilarious
"We did this promo thing in a VW campervan today and stopped at a petrol station on the way up, handing out grandstand tickets.
"So we rocked up there and the newspaper was open on this page with a love heart around us, and I just thought 'that's hilarious'. I love that. It's good."
Naturally, as Formula One's last two World Champions and in light of their current positions, the spotlight has focused sharply on the British pair as their home race has drawn near.
Button is just naturally thrilled the time for the talking to stop and the action to start will come to an end on Friday with two 90-minute practice sessions.
"I always love the lead-up to the British Grand Prix. It is always exciting," smiled Button.
"We are always looking for a story leading up to the British Grand Prix but it is all over now, which is good, and we can concentrate on the important bit.
"It is great the weekend is here as we will have something good to talk about, hopefully, on Formula One as a whole."
To Webber's credit, however, he certainly did not back down when asked to clarify his remarks.
"The press continually ask and try to put some fireworks on these two," said the Australian, nodding towards Hamilton and Button sat in front of him.
"My opinion was exactly as it was. It is not the easiest to have a warm, fuzzy relationship as we are all competitors, but we don't hate each other's guts.
"It's the way it's always been at the front in Formula One, in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and it will continue in the future. It is certainly not rocket science."
Seven-times World Champion Michael Schumacher, who has had numerous team-mates during his extensive career, pointed out it simply comes down to compatibility.
The 41-year-old Mercedes driver said: "It depends very much on whether the characters fit together or not, and some do, some don't. It's as simple as this.
"It's the same as in real life. You choose your friends, but other people you don't choose. You're given them, so you deal with it."
It was suggested to Hamilton and Button that there should be a bit of needle between them, in particular as they are fighting for the title.
Again, Button refused to bite as he replied: "The important thing is that we work together, and we do, and that helps in the team.
"Of course, when you get on the circuit you want to beat each other. That's exactly the way it is."
Hamilton also poured cold water on the theory as he said: "We know you guys want it, but no. We're doing a good job, I think."
That was immediately followed by some deadpan humour from Hamilton, adding: "We're working very much on our acting careers, which seem to be going very well because we're convincing all of you.
"He (Button) is going to be James Bond, and I'm going to be the villain."
