The Ferrari elephant at Monza for Telethon


On the Thursday of the Italian Grand Prix, the strange sight of a life-sized baby elephant, in the colours and sporting the emblem of the Maranello Scuderia. Created in Maranello, it is all in aid of the Elephant Parade, a famous event in Milan, supported by the local cultural department, with the aim of highlighting the threat of extinction to the Asian Elephant. “Nello T” is the name of the elephant model and it was paraded in front of the Scuderia Ferrari hospitality area, where it was signed by the drivers, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, team principal Stefano Domenicali and all team members working in the garage.

Previous editions of this event have been held in Rotterdam, London, Antwerp and Amsterdam and this year’s in, Milan will be one of eighty created by popular artists and designers. Taking its inspiration from the Ferrari drivers’ race suits, Nello T weighs 65 kilos and is 1m 60 high. Chosen as a symbol of originality and technical worth, it will be on display in the Piazza Liberty in front of the Ferrari Store, from 16 September, before then being sold at auction on 22 November. Part of the proceeds will go to the Asian Elephant Foundation, with another going to Telethon’s support of research into genetic diseases, underlining the close links between Ferrari and Telethon and its efforts in supporting research.
