Heikki Kovalainen was all smiles despite spinning twice in Monaco Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday afternoon. Despite the action-packed Q1 he experienced, the Finnish Lotus driver remains the highest placed of Formula 1's three new teams' representatives.
With Hispania very much off the pace and Virgin Racing marooned in the two positions in front of it, Lotus continue to be viewed as the most impressive debutant squad of 2010, with Kovalainen's best lap time of 1:17.094 having been only nine tenths of a second off Jaime Alguersuari's fastest Q2 effort.
"Yes the second one was a bit out of control, to be honest, but it was a strategic call and I decided to go for it," Heikki laughed after spinning at both Mirabeau and the Grand Hotel Hairpin.
"I saw the gap to Kobayashi was point nine of a second and knew that two or three tenths from track evolution would not be enough, so I decided to go for it and was just out of control - I was all over the place on the second run!
"I didn't hit the wall, so it was fine. I felt very comfortable to push the car and we haven't made many changes, so we're going in the right direction…I thought, 'I'm not going play safe now, I'm going to go for it!' - it didn't work out today but we're in a good position."
