Wet weather possible for Korea F1 event

There is a chance of another rain-affected Grand Prix event this weekend

The forecast for the city of Mokpo - the closest to the Yeongam venue in Korea's Jeollanam-do province - is not predicting the kind of extreme conditions that caused qualifying for the recent Japanese Grand Prix to be postponed.

But the skies above the Korean International Circuit will be cool, cloudy and breezy for much of the weekend, with the chance of showers increasing late on Saturday and into the small hours of Sunday.

And some reports are forecasting a definitely wet day in Mokpo on Monday, the after the inaugural South Korean event, with the accuracy of that prediction clouded by the super-typhoon 'Megi' off China.

"I think we have a very interesting weekend ahead," said Virgin team boss John Booth.

Local reports say as few as 60,000 tickets have been sold for the three-day event so far, with the Yeongam venue still essentially under construction and the F1 event lacking a naming sponsor.

"Frankly, we have not been prepared well for our F1 debut," said Yoon Keun-Sang, the PR director for the race organiser.

"If we host this year's event successfully, the situation will be far different next year," he is quoted by the Bangkok Post.

This coming weekend, the Magyar Hungaroring circuit will be the backdrop to the third Ferrari Racing Days of the season. The event features the fifth rounds of the Italian and European series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and will also see on track, the Ferrari cars involved in the non-competitive programmes run by the Maranello Corse Clienti Department. Alongside the F430 Challenge cars competing in a double bill of practice and races, fifteen historic single-seaters run by the F1 Clienti department will take to the track, as well as four Ferrari FXX and fourteen 599XX, taking part in some free practice sessions.

Special guest at the event on the Sunday, will be Felipe Massa, the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro race driver, who comes to Budapest to greet the Prancing Horse fans from the wheel of an F2008. On Saturday, the Maranello team’s official test driver, Marc Gené will be in attendance as a coach to the drivers taking part in the F1 Clienti programmes. The event gets underway on Friday 3 September, with testing and free practice, while Saturday features two qualifying sessions and the first races, ending on Sunday with the second leg for the Trofeo Pirelli and Coppa Shell categories, competing together in two races, but with separate classifications.

Going into the much awaited meeting, Andrea Belluzzi (Motor/Modena) from San Marino, leads the Italian Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli on 94 points, while the young Motor/Piacenza driver, Andrea Rizzoli heads the gentleman drivers in the Coppa Shell on 82 points. In the European series of the one-make championship, Austria’s Philipp Baron (Baron Service) heads the Trofeo Pirelli classification on 106 points, while England’s Oliver Morley of the Motor/Malucelli team, tops the Coppa Shell standings with 66 points.

Whether they have grown up together or have only just joined the team, for the men of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, “Wrooom” represents something really outstanding. For Stefano Domenicali, the event at Madonna di Campiglio is something special and he chose to reaffirm that view at the presentation of the book by Ercole Colombo. “There is so much one could say about Wrooom. For example, there is the coincidence that the first edition dates back to 1991, the year I joined Ferrari, not to mention the fact it takes place in the mountains, which are a great passion of mine,” said Domenicali. “I wish to take this opportunity to thank Maurizio Arrivabene and everyone at Philip Morris for the way they handle their role as a partner of Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. I always ask my engineers to be creative and here we are, this event is an example of creativity in the different world of communications. Fernando Alonso’s second appearance in the Dolomites lasted only a few hours and was marked by a different colour background to his visit last January. “Back then, everything was white, while today, I’m struggling to get my bearings,” said the Spanish driver. “For me this place is linked to my first ever event with the Scuderia and it was an amazing experience, unrepeatable in fact. Wrooom is the best way possible to start the season in harmony and with the right spirit. You can also see that from the photos in this book; you work, but it’s fun. I think Ercole’s book is only the first step: what about a film next as Hollywood beckons!”

RÄIKKÖNEN: I WASN'T THINKING WHAT OTHERS THOUGHT OF ME

Kimi Räikkönen still divides opinions on the F1-paddock.

Some couldn't take at all Räikkönen's cool way of taking things while some again felt really warm for Räikkönen both as a human being and as a driver. The Iceman didn't care what others did.

- I didn't think much about what others thought of me. And I didn't think of them.

- It worked for me although others wanted to think more. Everybody out there are their own persons, Räikkönen analysed the F1-drivers.

One who remembers Räikkönen with special warmth is Sauber's technical manager Willy Rampf.

- He was the best driver I have ever worked with. I still respect him very much, Rampf told in Autosport's interview a while ago.

- Rally is probably the same as F1 was about 20 years ago. They do things professionally in rally but the going is completely different, Räikkönen compared.

- Less people and a more relaxed grip in everything, he summed up.

Kimi Räikkönen visited his sponsor's event in Finland where they showed the Iceman DNA-commercial.

Kimi's unique sponsor-event brought a handful of media people and a full hall of eager DNA-partners who got to see Finland's most famous celebrity in flesh.

Kimi was in a good mood and he answered with a smile to Anette Latva-Piikkilä's questions. He also compared himself to other f1-drivers and pondered what made him different from other talented drivers.

– Of course there's a lot of things, everyone is a different person. Of course a lot depends on who looks and who thinks whatever but I have never thought about what they think about me. And I haven't been interested in what they do, I've always tried to do just my own thing, Kimi revealed.

According to Kimi this strategy has always worked for him but the same recipe isn't necessarily the right one for others. Kimi reminded that a good car makes a big difference when thinking of success.

– You have to have a good car and a good team. The top drivers are yet quite even although there might be some small differences in some things. But the top drivers don't differ much from each other if you would put them in the same car, Kimi confessed.

Loeb, Hirvonen, Räikkönen and others to drive on streets of Porto

This year's Vodafone Rallye de Portugal will see the inclusion of The Porto Roadshow, with the most important cars and drivers entered in the rally participating in the event.

After being appointed the official promoter for the FIA World Rally Championship, North One Sport pledged to support organisers, teams and drivers running events promoting the WRC rallies. And this was an opportunity that the organisers of the Portuguese round of the 2010 championship did not miss.

The Porto Roadshow will be held on the Sunday prior to the rally - May 23rd – amid the stunning scenery of Aliados Avenue. The area surrounding City Hall will be transformed for the day, into a superspecial stage; 950 meters long and with jumps, chicanes, donut areas and drifting, it will set the scene for the following week’s rally perfectly.

The show will start with an autograph session at 2.30pm, then at 3.30pm, practice will start. From 5.00pm and with just one driver on the track, the event itself will begin, with a one-hour live transmission on Portugual’s RTP Channel 1.

Almost twenty drivers and cars will attend the event.
