Senna film wins prestigious US award

The documentary film of the life of Ayrton Senna has won the World Cinema Audience Award for Documentary Film at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.

The film, which was released in Japan and Brazil last year, will be released across the rest of the world in 2011. In the UK the release is being timed to coincide with the British Grand Prix in July.

The reaction in the USA has been favourable. "Technical and musical aspects are first-rate," said the Hollywood Reporter. "A fine documentary about one of auto racing's greats will please fans and make some new ones."

The LA Times was even more enthusiastic. "Sometimes a documentary will unexpectedly reach out and grab you by the throat, not giving you a second to breathe. That's that way it was with Senna."

Vettel scoops another award

Red Bull Racing man Sebastian Vettel has been named the European Sportsman of the Year by members of the International Sports Press Association (AISP). The German, who became the youngest ever Formula 1 World Champion last season, is the 28th winner of the annual poll.

Vettel, who succeeds 2009 winner Roger Federer, got 79 votes in total. French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre was second, with only one vote less than Vettel, while tennis ace Rafael Nadal took 'bronze' with 74.

Vettel is only the second F1 driver to win the poll, following on from Michael Schumacher, statistically the most successful driver in the history of the sport, who has claimed the accolade four times back in 2003, 2002, 2001 and somewhat controversially 1994.
