Räikkönen didn't have room to avoid Alonso + Video Interview after Race

Räikkönen's Lotus and Alonso's Ferrari clashed when they were braking into the first corner. Lotus-car's front wing touched Ferrari's rear tyre and hence Alonso's race stopped shortly when he spun off the track.

– After the start I was all the time on the left side when we started to brake. Fernando came all the time more and more to the left. I tried to go more to the left but there was no room where to go. What happened happened because I couldn't go anywhere, Räikkönen cleared up.

Räikkönen's front wing suffered a mild damage and the car's speed wasn't enough to fight for a better position than 5th. The chance went when Lewis Hamilton succeeded to return just beside Räikkönen after a very fast pitstop. Since Lotus was on the left side, McLaren got a cleaner driving line and passed.

Alonso frustrated with Räikkönen

Fernando Alonso has questioned Kimi Raikkonen's approach during the first corner of the Japanese GP after the title winner's race-ending clash with the Lotus at Suzuka

Alonso's retirement, coupled with a dominant victory for Sebastian Vettel, has cut the Spaniard's lead to just four points with five races remaining.

The Ferrari was sent spinning into the gravel as the two former World Champions battled into the sweeping first turn.

"Well I had no space on the right, I had Button there I think, on the left I had Kimi and I don't understand why Kimi didn't lift off as there was no room out there and it was only the first corner," he told Sky Sports F1. "But that is the way it and this time it was us."

Trying to stay optimistic, Alonso added that whilst he suffered bad luck in Japan, it could easily happen to his rivals in any of the forthcoming races.
"Not really," he replied when asked if his title hopes had suffered a serious setback. "This time I retire, next time maybe it will be Vettel who will retire.
"You never know, this is motorsport. With five races to go it will be like a mini Championship. We will start with the same points and we need to score one more point in the five races than the others so we will try to do that."

Kimi Räikkönen: Top Gear video teaser, what to expect on Sunday ?

During the latter hours of Wednesday morning, Kimi took part in the filming of one of the world’s most watched television programmes: Top Gear

There was a noticeable chill in the air when Kimi arrived in the South-East of England, having jetted in from his home in Zurich for the day to drive a rather abused ‘Reasonably Priced Car’ around the legendary Top Gear test track.

After meeting the Stig – and trying to deduce who the latest driver to take that moniker might be – Kimi was shown the test track then let loose in the front wheel drive family runabout. Declaring the car ‘better than expected’, he explored the levels of adhesion, confirming that understeer and oversteer were both present in plentiful quantities when provoked. With the track learnt, the stopwatches were started. Kimi set a time of…. well, you’ll have to watch the programme to know that!

With the on-track action wrapped up, it was time to face one of Britain’s most renowned broadcasters: Jeremy Clarkson. Relaxing on the bench style leather car seats in front of an audience of around 400 fans lucky enough to be selected from the ten-year long waiting list to watch filming, Kimi’s appearance was certainly memorable, but we’re not going to give away any more than that.

Make sure you tune in to BBC TWO this coming Sunday at 20:00 UK time. Just to whet your appetite, here’s a short video teaser!

Video: BBC - Hamilton and Vettel discuss contrasting fortunes following first test

Hamilton says he is "in a good place" ahead of the new season whilst Sebastian Vettel complains of a "loss of grip" following their first experiences driving their 2012-spec cars on the third day of pre-season testing in Jerez .

Hamilton states "things went pretty smoothly" and had "no nasty surprises" after driving his new McLaren MP4-27 for the first time.

By contrast, Vettel reveals he struggles with his new Red Bull RB8, complaining of "quite a big loss of grip" compared to last year's car which was built around the now-illegal 'blown diffuser' exhaust system, and having to adapt his driving style to cope with the changes.
